Week of 10/13-10/15: Podcasts and Video Essays

Updated: Oct 13, 2020

Tuesday, October 13 Synchronous Topic: Continuing Remediation and Considering Podcasts and Video Essays as Remediative Genres

If you miss class: Make sure that you've either listened to the podcasts of your choice or watched the video essays of your choice, and complete the in-class writing posted below as well as the genre activity included in the slides linked below. The midterm self-evaluation is due this evening at 10pm, so make sure to complete that or reach out if you'd like to negotiate a different due date. As we'll go over Project 2 in more detail along with examples in class, and your proposal is due this Sunday (10/18), make sure to get in contact with me if you want to see the examples from class or are unclear about the project focus.

Class Summary: We began with the in-class writing before moving to a check-in, and going over the upcoming assignments: the midterm self-assessment, and Project 2. We looked at a couple of examples of different takes from past students on Project 2, linked below. Then students broke out into groups to discuss the video essays and podcasts they chose from the reading lists, and work through the questions included in the Doc linked below. We then came back as a group to talk about the podcast and video essay as genres, their shared features, and how they draw on remediation in different ways.

In-Class Writing

How were the creators taking up multimodal choices in the podcasts that you listened to or video essays that you watched? What multimodal choices stood out?

How would you compare and contrast the different takes on the video essay or the podcast?

Tuesday, October 15 Asynchronous Topic: Exploring Podcasts and Video Essays Further

There is no asynchronous work due this week, as you have several assignments due: the midterm self-evaluation, Project 2 Proposal, and Multimodal Experiment 6.

Jump onto the call during Tuesday's office hours or Thursday's open hour if you want to talk through any of those assignments, or follow-up about your midterm self-assessment. As always, feel free to let me know if it would help to negotiate new due dates for all or some of these assignments as I know we're at a busy point in the semester.

Reminder for the Project 2 Proposal: The more detail you give me in terms of topic and approach, the more suggestions I can give and the more you'll have to draw on later for your SOGC.

For Multimodal Experiment 6, note that there are two options for how you want to approach the assignment depending on whether you want to focus on podcasts or video essays. You're not required to stick to the genre that you picked for Tuesday--feel free to switch it up.

Let me know what questions you run into as you work through these assignments!
