Week of 10/20-10/22: The Aural Mode and the Ethics of Remediation

Updated: Oct 26, 2020

Tuesday, October 20 Synchronous Topic: Diving Deeper into the Aural Mode

If you miss class: Make sure that you've read "A Tribe Called Red Remixes Sonic Stereotypes", and considered the questions it raises about critique through remediation and the ethical issues surrounding appropriative remediation. Review the slides posted below, and follow the directions for the in-class writing, which asks you to play with a lo-fi music creator. Let me know if you want your Project 1 added to the shared class folder below, as one of the things we discussed in class is sharing multimodal work. Finally, check the group sign-up sheet and send me an email letting me know what group you would like to be added to so I can add you to the Zoom chat channel that you'll use for this week's asynchronous class activity.

Class Summary: We began by looking at this example of remediation through movie poster redesigns, and talking about what they highlight about the films that the originals do not (and how they also might be more memorable than the original movie posters). Then we went over upcoming prompts and the group activity for the rest of the week before setting some time for the in-class writing below. We ended by going over the slides linked below.

Materials:

In-Class Writing

Try creating your own lo-fi music here: https://magenta.tensorflow.org/lofi-player

Once you’ve had a chance to play around with the creator, write about what you noticed for your in-class writing. What are the constraints and affordances of this tool? What do you think makes lo-fi music so popular? What can the genre, and this tool, show us about the connection between music, mood, and space?

Optional: Consider how you’ll draw on these ideas about music, mood, remediation, and space in your major project.

Tuesday, October 22 Asynchronous Topic: Checking in on Project 2

Your goal to complete by Sunday (10/25) at the latest is to meet with the group that you signed up for on Tuesday via Zoom chat and talk about your plans for Project 2. Your chat will be the record of your meeting, so you don't need to take notes or fill anything out.

Set up a time that you all want to meet together in the chat channel. You can meet anytime between now and Sunday, and should meet for at least 30 minutes. FYI, I’ll also be on the chat channels so that I can jump in if you run into any points of confusion or questions.

Here are the questions to consider in your chat:

  • What is your planned approach for Project 2, and how did you settle on that plan?

  • What concepts and readings do you plan to draw on in your SOGC and Project 2?

  • How will you balance time management, feasibility, and your goals for the course in Project 2?

  • What are you concerned or confused about, and what are you excited about for this project?

  • What questions, suggestions or feedback would be useful to get from the group?

Do your best to answer all of these questions, but it's okay if your conversation tangents to other concerns or topics related to the course. Feel free to follow up with me about any questions that aren't answered in the chat, or to let me know if you'd like me to jump in during your chat to field questions.

Other than that, your goal this week is to work toward a slice of Project 2, and to complete Multimodal Experiment 7 if you still need experiment options for your final portfolio.
