Week of 10/27-10/29: The Visual Mode

Updated: Oct 29, 2020

Tuesday, October 27 Synchronous Topic: Diving Deeper into the Visual Mode

If you miss class: Make sure that you've read the excerpt from Ways of Seeing and watched the episode of Abstract linked through the course calendar. Take a look at the slides linked below for questions and points linked to the readings. Follow the directions for the in-class writing, which asks you to compare the reading and episode. Follow up with me if you have questions about your project slice, as we'll spend time workshopping those in class today.

Class Summary: We began with the in-class writing outlined below, before going into workshop pairs to give people a chance to share slices, get initial feedback, and see different approaches to remediation. Then we came back together, went over the slides on the visual mode posted below, and then ended with the activity described in the slides, where folks redesigned local business logos and pitched their redesigns to me, drawing on the visual persuasion that Scher discusses in the Abstract episode.

Materials:

In-Class Writing

Compare and contrast Berger’s approach to visual language in Ways of Seeing and Scher’s approach in the episode of Abstract. What overlaps do you notice in how they discuss the visual mode? What differences?

Then choose either Berger or Scher to speak to further:

  • Option 1: According to Berger, “every image embodies a way of seeing” (p. 10). How do you think the images that you’ve taken and created illustrate your own way of seeing?

  • Option 2: Scher talks about how typography and graphic design is ultimately about creating a consistent identity. What do you think she means by that? How do we go about that?

Tuesday, October 22 Asynchronous Topic: Project 2 Work Time

There are no activities or tasks set for the rest of the week, to give you time to expand on your slices and complete a draft of Project 2. Please reach out to me, or come to office hours, if you run into trouble while working on your draft or want to talk through directions forward.

Make sure to submit your draft to Moodle by Sunday at 10pm.
