Week of 11/10-11/12: Introduction to Advocacy Media and Strategic Questioning

Updated: Nov 16, 2020

Tuesday, November 10 Synchronous Topic: Introduction to Advocacy Media & Strategic Questioning

If you miss class: Make sure that you've read "Strategic Questioning" and looked at The Waiting Game, as an example of advocacy through gameplay mechanics. We'll spend a good portion of this class discussing Project 3 and getting started on brainstorming, so make sure that you've read the Project 3 prompt, and checked in with me on your questions about the prompt as well as your idea. I recommend that you drop by during office hours or meet with me to talk through your plan for Project 3 if you miss class. Take a look at the slides posted below for a starting point on the discussion that you missed.

Class Summary: We began class with a check-in before going over what's coming up before and directly after fall break, including a closer look at the Project 3 prompt along with some student examples. (Let me know if you want to see more student examples--there are also a few examples linked at the bottom of the prompt page.) When then did a quick overview of some guiding principles for creating advocacy media, before everyone wrote down two strategic questions based on the reading and broke out into pairs to ask others their strategic questions. We came back and checked in on general questions and results from the strategic questioning, before going over The Waiting Game briefly, which we'll return to in more detail next week.

Materials:

In-Class Writing

  • What issues are you considering focusing on and why?

  • What action and communities are already addressing those issues? What platforms and forms of media do they use?

  • How could you build on the existing conversation through your own media?

  • What platforms and forms of media are you considering using, and why?

Focus on the questions here that spark, and take note of the questions you can’t answer quite yet.

Thursday, November 12 Asynchronous Topic: Checking in On Final Portfolio

Check out the video above for a breakdown of building your website for your final portfolio, along with examples and tips (apologies for the slight ringing in the audio). For the rest of the week, along with working on your Project 3 proposal and Multimodal Experiment 9 if you still need multimodal experiments, spend some time thinking through and implementing your final portfolio design on your website.

Make sure that you've chosen a website builder and created a website where you'll host your work from this semester. If you haven't yet, make sure to email me the link to your website this week by Sunday (11/15) at 10pm.

Then take some time to reflect on what you want your final portfolio to convey about you and your creations, and how you'll communicate that through the design and arrangement of your website. Make sure to take all the pre-created and pre-filled text off of your website if you have any, and I recommend that you work on adding your multimodal experiments, in-class writing, and Project 1 to help space out your work.
